In the Footsteps of the Marines

10 June 2012

The Kapiti Jogger and Walkers Club is organising this event as part of the Salute70 celebrations, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the arrival of US Marines in NZ during WW2. It will provide a unique opportunity to run or walk the challenging route march described by Leon Uris in his book Battle Cry. The 13km course includes sealed and unsealed roads, bush and tracks and offers spectacular views. The route climbs over 300m so a good standard of fitness is required. The race is restricted to people 16yrs and older.

It’s anticipated that NZ services personnel, US Embassy staff, mountain runners and walkers from the region will take part. However all walkers and runners are welcome. The venue is Whareroa Farm, MacKays Crossing, north of Paekakariki. Walkers start at 9am and runners at 10am. Entry fee is $20 with $5 extra to enter on the day.
